Overweight Hauling

All roads in the RM of Estevan are considered secondary weight, which is 54,500 kg.

Which permit do I need?

It depends on the roads your load will travel on and the weight of your load. 

If your route uses a provincial highway:
Apply to the SGI Permit Office (1-800-667-7575), which issues overweight and over-dimensional permits on behalf of the Ministry of Highways. SGI sets your route, fees, and conditions.

If your load is heavy enough to exceed the provincial thresholds (a gross vehicle weight over 54,500 kg, or an axle group over 27,000 kg), your SGI permit will include a condition requiring you to get authorization from each RM your route passes through. In that case, once you have your SGI permit, contact the RM office to complete your RM authorization before you travel on our roads.

If your route stays entirely on RM roads:
If your move happens completely within the municipality and doesn't use a provincial highway, apply directly to the RM for an overweight permit for travel on our municipal roads.

How to get your RM permit

  • Contact the Municipal Office with your load details, weight, and intended route.
  • Complete the RM overweight permit application and pay the permit fee.
  • Receive your authorization before you haul.


Please tell us if you don't haul

If you've applied for an overweight permit and your plans change and you don't end up hauling, please let the office know. If you don't notify us, the permit fee will still be charged.

Ongoing or repeated hauling

If you'll be running heavy loads through the RM regularly — for oilfield, aggregate, or construction work — a Road Maintenance Agreement may be required. This shares the cost of road wear caused by heavy traffic and helps keep our roads in good shape. Contact the office to discuss whether an agreement applies to your operation.

Watch for spring road bans

Spring weight restrictions apply to municipal and secondary roads and can limit or halt heavy hauling for part of the year. A valid permit does not override an active road ban. Before you move, check the Highway Hotline (call 511 or visit hotline.gov.sk.ca) and contact the RM for any local restrictions in effect.
